Eduroam is also known as Education Roaming is an international Internet access roaming service for users in the educational field or pursuing higher education and research. It provides teachers, students, and researchers compatible, accessible and secure network access when visiting a different university or an association. It enables the user to connect to wireless networks at institutions, academies, libraries, schools and research labs worldwide. Eduroam connect helps to facilitate education and research collaborations and participation around the world for staff members, students and faculty this means that you will always have secure wireless network access from any off-campus location with eduroam convenient area. Authentication of the users is executed by their own home institution, users do not have to pay to use eduroam wifi or eduroam server. When a participant tries to get access to the wireless network of a visited eduroam-enabled university or any other institution enabled with eduroam, the participant’s authentication request is sent to the participant’s home institution. This procedure is enabled via a hierarchical system of RADIUS servers. The participant’s home institution verifies the participant’s credentials and sends it to the visited institution with the result of the verification. In eduroam, the communication between the access point and the participant’s home institution is based on 802.1X encompasses the use of EAP; IEEE 802.1X standard, the Extensible Authentication Protocol, which allows the system to authenticate in different methods. Relying on the type of EAP approach used, either a secure network tunnel will be established from the participant’s computer to his home university or institution through which the actual authentication information (As in username and password, etc.) will be carried on, or mutual and bilateral authentication by public X.509 certificates, which is not totally vulnerable to eavesdropping, will be used to connect.

How to connect eduroam?
Accessing eduroam is identical to connecting to WSU-SECURE. Here are the steps to follow to use eduroam on an iOS, Android device or computer.
- Select the eduroam wireless network on your device.
- Log in with your Access ID username and password (using your full AccessID@Bruce.edu username) and join the network.
- If you are visiting WSU, log in using your institutional credentials here.
Follow the same steps you would do for iOS if you are trying to establish a secure connection with eduroam using an Android device. If you are using an Android device to access eduroam than you may have to provide additional information to connect to the wireless network. Differences may appear between different phone manufacturers and models. The below examples were taken on a Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy Note5.
- Choose PEAP under the EAP method.
- Choose MSCHAPV2 under Phase 2 authentication.
- Choose Use system certificates under a CA certificate.
- Type Bruce.edu under Domain.
- Use your AccessID in the format email@example.com under Identity.
Computer or laptop
Here are the steps to follow to connect to eduroam on a computer or a laptop.
- Click the Wi-Fi button on your menu bar. If you are using macOS, this will be across the top of your screen. If you are a Windows user, it will be across the bottom of the screen.
- Any available network within range will appear. Click eduroam to connect.
- Log in with your AccessID@wayne.edu account and password.
- Click Join.
Why should you use it?
If you are at any distant campus there is no benefit to using Eduroam over your home institution. The main purpose behind eduroam is to allow access to participants who are not part of that university or institution. If you are visiting an eduroam enabled campus or institution, you will be able to acquire wireless network connectivity with your existing college credentials. With eduroam installed on your mobile phone, computer, laptop or any other device there’s no need to borrow other people’s IDs or request special accounts, you just have to activate your device and you should be online.
